Wester Ross
Following the coast North from Plockton towards Ullapool we come across the area known as Wester Ross. This must be one of the most varied and captivating landscapes in Scotland. From the lush native woodland and sheltered bays of the south to the towering bare mountains of the North it has some breathtaking views and really rich scenery.
The coastline is dotted with beautiful bays with pure, white sandy bays and crystal clear waters. The climate is certainly unpredictable but is generally much milder than you might expect, in fact the largest Eucalyptus in the Northern hemisphere grows here and palm trees are not an uncommon sight. The mountains run right down to the shore and the regular rainfall brings some fantastic waterfalls, rushing down the hillsides.
Despite the real impression of wilderness there are plenty of facilities to be found in the small towns and villages dotted along the coast (except on a Sunday!). But it is the open country which is the real draw to this area, unspoilt beaches, native woodland, and rare wildlife. Inland waters like Loch Maree rank with the finest in the land. This is not a place to come for visitor centres and tea rooms, this is where you come to leave all that behind and to really get some distance on things in the heart of these majestic mountains and moorlands.
