Pittenweem
Nestling on the shores of the Kingdom of Fife, Pittenweem is a picturesque east coast fishing village which still has the charm and atmosphere of a bustling fishing port. Beautifully restored houses showing a Dutch architectural influence line the streets, lanes and harbour. Local inns provide a welcome retreat for fishermen and visitors alike.
Becoming immersed in the local community is easily achieved with local traders on the high street and each morning you can watch or take part in the fish markets held daily at 8am. Each year there is a local arts festival.
Founded by Augustinian Monks in the 1200's, the local community grew alongside the North Sea. The name Pittenweem means place of the cave referring to St Fillan's cave found within the town.
It was said that St Fillan wrote his sermons within the confines of the cave - by the light of his glowing left arm! Down the years it has also been used by the monks, smugglers and even as a witch's prison.
