Linlithgow Palace
Now a ruined shell, Linlithgow Palace was one of the major Royal Residences of Stewart Dynasty, chosen at times over Holyrood Palace. One of the most famous Stewarts associated with the Palace is Mary Queen of Scots who was born here in 1542. However, the first written record of dates back to 1301 when Edward I of England, Longshanks, used the original wooden fort as his armoury and later the English used it as a base for the Battle of Bannockburn.
In 1424 James I of Scotland started to rebuild the fort with ambitious plans which the later Stewarts modified and added to depending upon the fashions of their time. Through the generations, Linlithgow Palace became a sumptuous residence for entertaining and living within.
The last Royal to stay in Linlithgow Palace was Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. The following year, the Duke of Cumberland stayed there with the British Army on their way North to meet Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites. Alas someone left a fire burning which soon spread quickly throughout the rest of the building. Within hours the palace was the shell you see today.
